WORKERS
COMPLAIN.
Complaining
that
they
are
forced
to
contribute
almost
$7.00
a
month
from
their
meager
earnings
for the
so called
‘*protection
of the
union’’
a number
of
women
working
at the
tobacco
factory
in Puarta
de Tierra this
week
presented
themselves
before
“he Bureau
of Labor
asking
that something
be done officially
to relieve their situation.
They
complained
that
if they
do not
pay this contribution
they
would
not be
permitted
to
work
in
the factory
and
they stated
that more
than
half of these
women
workers—mostly
stiippers
-are
paying
the
$7
a
month
under
protest.
They said they were
afraid to antogonize
the union
by
an
open
rebellion
as they
were
afraid of
losing
their
jobs.
Al-
though
these
wrmen
were
not
connect-
ed
with the
official strike
and received
no benefits
they are
now having
to pay
to the union more
than twice the ambunt
previously
contrihuted.
They
further
complained
that
no
ac-
count
was
ren ered
them
as
to what
be-
can.e
of this money.
They
showed
that
on
the
basis
of 2,000
workers
in
San
Juan,
the
contribntions
amounted
to
ozer
$12,000
every
month.
‘‘What
it
amounts
to at
the present
time,”’ they
told
the Bureau
of
Labor,
is that
we
are
working
hard
every
day
in
order
to
maintain
a few socialistic
leaders
in
ease
and
comfort,
administering
the
affairs
of their
