a
runnng
mate
to
the
Ordinance
passed
by
this
Council providing for a
Police Force
Tor
St. Croix.
If you
remember,
the
sala-
ries
passed
in
the last
Ordinance
hove
been
considerably
larger
‘han
what
we
have
been paying.
Itis
now
necessiry
to
increase
the
amount
under
szlares,
and
if
the
re-organization
propcsed
is
to be carried
out from January
1,
thirty
thousand franes
will be required
to efiect
same;
probably
all of
this
amount
will
not
be
expended.
for
several
reasons;
the principal
reason
is,
as
January
1
is
close
at ha.id it might not be
possible
to
procure
all the incumbents
to have
them
in office; but
I think,
in
all probability,
twenty
or
twenty-five
thousand
fracs
might be used
during that period.
The
wages
we
are
now paying are
not
sufficient
to
procure
efficient
men
for
the force,
and
as I stated
before.

we are paying; however
we hope
to
pro-
cure better
class of personneland

per way of proeuring
them

to
pay
a
higher
wage.

regulating
the
Municipal Police Force
provides
for
cne
Director of Police, four District Chiefs
of
Police, Inspectors,
Sergeants,
Patrolmren
and Matrons.
The Director of
Police
is
settled by the Ordinance;
but
the
num-
ber of Inspectors,
Sergeants
and
patrol
men were
not
specified.

is
right
for
us
to know
how
many
Sor-
geants
and patrolmen
that
are
proposed
before
we vote for the money.
