CROIX, USVI (November 26, 2018) — Department of Health staff is grief-stricken by news of fatal shooting incident that occurred on the premises of the new modular units over the weekend. Commissioner Michelle S. Davis and Department staff extend their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Kaiamesha Thomas. Thomas was shot sometime between 11:30 p.m. Saturday night and midnight on Sunday while on duty as a security guard. Her body was discovered by her co-worker around 12:17 a.m. on the grounds where Department of Health’s new modular units are being constructed. Thomas was a security guard with the RT Unlimited Security firm, contracted by Modular Genius. Modular Genius has been contracted by The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to build the much-needed modular offices and clinics. Modular Genius representatives expressed their shock and dismay. While the Department mourns this tragic incident, it encourages the staff and public to remain vigilant at all times and to be cooperative with police. The Department has limited knowledge about the shooting incident, but is continuing to monitor the situation and gather information to support the VIPD’s investigation. Violence is a public health concern and should be treated like any other health epidemic. DOH leadership staff reassures the public that the Charles Harwood Medical Complex grounds are safe. DOH’s top priority is the health and safety of Virgin Islanders. ##
