bill
before this body
is under
discussion
to-
day.

I
would like to correct
a wrong impression
among some of the members
of this body,
caused
by my remarks
at the
informal
meeting
on Monday.
lam
not
opposing
the
question
as to having
a steam
roller
or
other
modern
improvement
for
re-
pairing
our roads.
But lam opposing
and
mean
to fight the excessive
tax
on
automobiles
contained
in the ordinance;
it is entirely
too
high.
I
am
against
automobiles
being
taxed
according
to
weight; I am
1n favor of the horse- power
system.
I hope he will certainly modify
the
tax from
S2O
to $lO
per
year
per
automobile,
I
hope
the
members
will
understand
that
lam
not opposing
the
question
of the
steam
roller as they have
represented
me
outside
this
body.
I
stand for everything
that
is progressive
and modern.
Nobody
will favor having
good
roads
more
than
I.
If
Council
passes
this morey bill, I kope it will not
have the
same
effect as
the Motor Plow
at *“‘Anna’s Hope’’
and
that it will be
used
not on the
centre
line road
alone,
budon all the roads
of the island.
The Chairman
remarked:
If there are
no further discussions
desired,
I will put
the
names
of
the
members
before
the
house for their vote.

District (Ramsay)
said:
Mr. Chairman.
Before closing, I would like to state thatI
am in full accord with the remarks
of the
last speaker.
My opinion is that S2O tax
on
automobiles
is too much,
when
com-
pared
with trucks
paying SSO;
we should
think of increasing
the
tax on trucks and
decreasing
that on automobiles.
I would
be in favor of having the
road roller and
modern implements to improve our roads,
but
let us kope
that
it will give
better
results
than the
Motor
Plow at
Anna’s
Hope
some
years
ago.
The Chairman
remarked:
All in favor
of electing
the members
that were ballot-
ted
for last
Monday,
raise
your
right
hand.
It was unanimously carried.

Government
would
like to make the suggestion
that first dis-
cussion
remain
open.
The
committee
may
find certain things
that
would
be
beneficial to have in this bill and
for this
reason
1 make the suggestion.

I

just
about to say the same
thing as
the
Despatching
Secretary.
The
Committee
has
been
voted for to consider
and report
oen
the bill, which
committee
will make
its recommendation
as to
what should be
adopted.
I think
we
should
await
the
report of the committee.
The
Chairman put motion
to the
vote
and
was
unanimously
carried
for
first
discussion
to remain
open.
A recess
of twenty minutes
was given.
