Searchable Databases
For those who are interested in learning more about the distance learning options available out there, the National Distance Learning Center database is a great place to get started. You can FTP in by using FTP as your name and your Email address as your password.
The NDLC database is maintained by Owensboro Community College, Owensboro, Kentucky. Schools that offer distance learning programs of any type, ranging from traditional correspondence courses to on-line Ph.D. programs via Internet are encouraged to post information about their offerings in this database.
Apparently, each school writes a description of its programs and uploads it to NLDC. I say this because the quality of the data is uneven. Some schools offer tons of info, including course listings & descriptions, degree requirements, how to enroll, etc. Others provide little more than a pragraph or two of general information, plus an address and phone number to call for more.
This is an on-line searchable database, so it is fairly quick and easy to zero in on the information you want. I have found that the information here is generally more detailed than that in the International Distance Learning Center (IDLC) database maintained at the University of London (UK). IDLC has information on a great many more programs (especially international programs) but fewer details about each program.
NDLC Office Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CT Friday, 8:00a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT Phone: (502) 686-4556 Fax: (502) 686-4558 The NDLC Database is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The International Centre for Distance Learning at the UK Open University continues to offer free online access to its distance education database. The database currently contains information on
over 28,000 distance-taught courses and programmes, most of them offered by institutions in countries of the Commonwealth in Africa, Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, Europe and North America
More than 800 distance teaching institutions worldwide
6,500 books, journal articles, research reports, conference papers, dissertations and other types of literature relating to all aspects of the theory and practice of distance education.
Telnet in here.
At the welcome message please login to the Open University VAX cluster with the Username: ICDL We would then like you to access the database using your country name as Account code. Please enter this without any spaces. The Password is then just AAA You need to be using a VT100 terminal. If you have any difficulty or want to comment, please send e-mail to n.ismail@open.ac.uk
Some Universities
1. City University
Office of Admissions & Student Affairs

BS/BA degree programs. It is accredited by the Northwest
Association of Schools and Colleges.

orientation meeting.

SUNY/RC offers many external BA/BS programs. In fact it
offers *only* external degrees and is probably the most
widely recognized college of its type. SUNY/RC offers no
courses itself (at least I don't think it does). Instead it
requires certain combinations of courses to meet its degree
requirements, then helps its students find colleges that
offers those courses. This can be through correspondence
courses, night schools, etc.
Rochester Institute of Technology also offers a degree program
that looks very good. You can receive extensive info about their
programs via e-mail. Here's how:
To obtain more information through the automated response system:
1) Send e-mail to:RITDL@ritvax.isc.rit.edu
2) Enter subject as:
BSAAS (BS in Applied Arts and Science) Note: this includes
info on computer science degrees.
BSEMT (BS in Electrical/Mechanical Technology)
MSTST (MS in Telecommunications Software Technology)
MSSDM (MS in Software Development and Management)
CERACC (Certificate in Applied Computing & Communications)
CERHSA (Certificate in Health Systems Administration)
CERDC (Certificate in Data Communications)
CERVC (Certificate in Voice Communications)
CERSWM (Certificate in Solid Waste Management Technology)
CEREM (Certificate in Emergency Management)
3) Type a message (if you have specific questions) or leave
message blank
