Mrs." Smith
says
that
she
is working
for
a
uniform basis of social
legislation throughout
the British Empire
so that British
subjeets
can
move freely
from one part to another
with
the confi-
dent
knowledge
that
they
will enjoy
equal security in
all
parts.
Mrs.
Smith
.said
that
in
her
opinion
the
two great
'needs
for social
legislation
today
area
minimum
wage basis
for women workers
and
a universal
mothers
pension
act.

12th.—It
was
officially
annourced
today
that
there
will be
no
immediate
release
of political
prisoners.
Mr. O’Higgins, Minister of Home Affairs
so
informed
a
dalegation
of
transport
workers who
called
for
release of-
the
prisoners
and
demanded
freedom
of
gpeech
and of the
press
for
the
coming
elections.
The minister said
the govern-
ment ‘has evidence
that
the Republicans
are preparing
to renew
their
onslaught
on the econogic
life of the
country.
In
the
circumstances,
he added,
itwas
not
proposed
to release
immediately
and
in-
diseriminately those who have challenged
the people.
He did not feel

steps

conducive
to
freedom
