A PROCLAMATION



In 1952, the United States Congress adopted a resolution to set aside and proclaim

the first Thursday of May of each year as a National Day of Prayer. Faith and prayer are

important for the guidance they provide in our lives. We can congregate, worship and pray

freely, whether in public or in private.



The 66th observance of the National Day of Prayer will be held on Thursday, May

4, 2017, with the theme For Your Great Name's Sake, Hear Us. Forgive Us, Heal Us. A

National Day of Prayer has been part of our heritage since it was declared by the First

Continental Congress in 1775 and the United States Congress in 1952 approved a Joint

Resolution setting aside a day each year to pray in our nation.



The United States Congress, by Public Law 100-307, in 1988, as amended, affirms

that it is essential for us as a nation to pray and directs the President of the United States to

set aside and proclaim the first Thursday of May annually as a National Day of Prayer.



The mission of the National Day of Prayer Task Force is to mobilize prayer

throughout America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture.

The Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage

participation on the National Day of Prayer.



Leaders, citizens and residents of our Nation and Territory are afforded the

privilege of prayer, affirming our spiritual heritage and the principles upon which our

nation was founded. We unite with fellow residents of our Nation and our Territory to

exercise the freedom we have to gather in prayer with thankfulness while seeking guidance,

provision, protection and purpose for the benefit of every individual and our Nation and

the Territory as a whole. We are grateful for those who defend our freedoms and ask for

peace throughout our territory, nation and world.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Kenneth E. Mapp, Governor of the Virgin Islands of the

United States, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954,

as amended, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 4, 2017, as the Territorial Day of Prayer

within the United States Virgin Islands. I humbly ask that all residents of the Territory,

each according to their own faith, beliefs, and conscience, to join me in honoring all of the

grace and blessings imparted to us each and every day and to pray for guidance and

protection for the people of our nations and our residents of the Territory during these

troubled times.
