UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Academic Restructuring Task Force 2/06/04 The Task Force has been subdivided into five working groups, each with a specific responsibility: 1. Programs. This group will identify the programs that would come under the umbrella of each school. It will consolidate and group programs into units and determine appropriate levels of leadership for each unit. This leadership would have full responsibility for the development and coordination of the programs within the unit. In keeping with an overall goal of a flatter organizational structure with greater faculty greater control over program development, this group will recommend an appropriate academic administrative structure, one that also addresses program quality issues through an improved faculty evaluation process in which faculty would be evaluated by peers in their disciplines and according to common standards developed by the dean.. Chair = L. Rosenthal 2. Cost. This group will provide costs for the models proposed by the Programs Group, and will compare those costs with those of the current organizational structure. This information will facilitate the Programs and Cost Groups working together to design a model for academic administration that will ensure that the objectives of effectiveness and efficiency are balanced by the need to maintain and enhance program quality. Chair = J. Leipzig 3. Policies and Procedures. This group is charged with identifying those policies and procedures that would be affected by the restructuring and with making recommendations on ways of addressing them. Chair = C. Cook 4. Administrative Roles. This group will develop a job description for the Deans, and will rewrite the job descriptions for the Provost and Chancellors to ensure effective, collaborative leadership. Chair = L. Thomas 5. Communications. This group has been charged with developing a communications plan to ensure that the internal and external stakeholders are adequately and appropriately informed about the goals, the process and the outcomes. Chair = R. Godfrey G-M Moolenaar Provost
