44 THE ROLE OF RESEARCH AT THE COLLEGE AND ITS RELATION TO OTHER ASPECTS OF THE COLLEGE'S PROGRAM (Board of Trustees Meeting, March 16, 1969) The President explained that the College's first commitment was to good teaching and that it was also committed to community service and research. The College of the Virgin Islands did not base faculty promotions on research and writing in the manner of many mainland colleges and universities, but it did encourage research where it was felt that the community would benefit and that the research involved would serve to renew the faculty member's professional interest in his own discipline. The methods used by the College to review and approve research proposals were also discussed and some specific research projects were reviewed. It was agreed that research was an important part of the College's function, but that we needed to continue to upgrade our research effort.
