EXCAVATIONS

Two

assert
that
they
have

excavations

ancien: city of Carthage
to

disprove
the generally
accepted
theories

ofi yorigin and foundation.
This famous

city of African antiquity
was
situated
in

the territory now belonging
to Tunis.
It

is supoose
to have
been
the
latest of the
Phoenician
colonies
and
to
have
been
sattled
by
people
from
Tyre and Utica
sometime
in
the
middle
of
the
ninth
|
century before
Christ.
One
legend says
that
the
city
was
founded
by Dido, or
Flissa.
of Tyre.
Dido
was
the
king’s
daugzther
and after her father’s death
her
brother
murdered
her hasband
to obtain

his wealth.
According
to
the
tradition
Dido
took
the
treasure
and
flad
from
}
Tyre
with
a party of friends
to the
coast
of
Africa
where
she
founded
the
city
of Carthage
on Byrsa
nill.

But-these
beauriful
stories
are
about
to be upset by ever meddling
science
and
proved
to be
mere
inventions
of
Virgil
and other
poets.

bones

leads
the

the
period
during

the Trojan war.”
But it

that
there
was
an

colony
in
Car-
thage.
