“Chalkdust” Releases Book on Carnival Tradition 
 
 
The Virgin Islands Carnival Committee will host a book unveiling this evening featuring 
Dr. Hollis Liverpool, also known as the legendary calypsonian “Chalkdust,” at 6 p.m. at the Virgin Islands Cultural 
Heritage Institute on St. Thomas.  
 
Dr. Liverpool, who is a visiting assistant professor of history on the St. Thomas campus of the University 
of the Virgin Islands,  will unveil his latest book entitled, “Rituals of Power and Rebellion: The Carnival Tradition 
in Trinidad and Tobago.”  
 
Dr. Liverpool, a native of Trinidad, holds a bachelor’s degree in history and sociology, a master’s degree in 
history, a master’s degree in African history and a Ph.D. in history and ethnomusicology.
