MAILROBBERS
PAY WITH LIVES.
J.
F. Kennedy,
a notorious
Missourian
bandit,
and
Harvey Loga~n,
his
compan-
ion, were killed after robbing a mail train
at Wittenberg,
Mo.
They had uncoupled
the
locomotive
and
taken
it
two
miles
down the track where
they had
an
auto-
mobile waifing. As th y ran for their car
they were shot by two hiding officers
who
had previous knowledge
of
their
plans.

SAILS WITHOUT HELMSMAN.
An American
passenger
ship
recently
sailed from New York
to Cuba
and
back
without any helmsman
except
when
ap-
proaching
harbors.
It
was stecred
by
a
mechanical
device
which
operates
on
the
gyroscopic
principle.
The
deviee,
which
was invented
by Elmer
A. Sperry,
inventor
of
the
gyroscope,
insures
a
mechanically
pearfect
course
and
gives
warning
of foreal
deviations
by
ring-
ing
of
a bell.
Capt.
Andrew Ashburn,
in charge
of the
vessel,
says
that when
they reached
Cuba
a
native pilot bacame
frightened
and
shouted
to
the
officars
that the ship would
run
