Drug & Alcohol Policy Statement It is the policy of the University of the Virgin Islands that: 1. The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession or use of a controlled substance, and/or illegal drugs is prohibited in and on the University of the Virgin Islands’ owned or controlled property. 2. The misuse or abuse of legal drugs, including alcohol, is prohibited on campus. Any University employee/student determined to have violated this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action for misconduct, which actions may include termination or expulsion. No employee/student is to report to work/class while under the influence of illegal drugs or influenced by the abuse of legal drugs. Violation of these policies by any employee/student will be reasons for evaluation/treatment for a drug use disorder or for disciplinary action up to and including termination or expulsion in accordance with University policies and procedures. In order to comply with the Federal law, the University requires that an employee/student notify the employer (University) of any criminal drug stature conviction for a violation occurring in the workplace/ classroom no later than 5 days after such conviction. The University must notify an Federal contracting agency within ten (10) days of having received notice that an employee/student engaged in the performance of such contract or grant has had a criminal drug statute conviction for a violation occurring in the workplace/classroom. The University will discipline any employee/student who is convicted or require the employee’s/student’s satisfactory participation in a drug abuse assistance or rehabilitation program in accordance with University policies and procedures.
