featured by
the

newspapers
this
morning.
It
ap-
pears
that
tne
telegram
sent
to
the
Pope
by
Mr.
De
Valera,
in which
ad-
verse
criticism of the King’'srecent
ies-
sage
to the Pontiff appeared,
is
consider-
ed
to be
a phase
of
the
situation
which
threatens
the
disrupiion
of the
negotiza
tions for finding
a
basis
for
peace
with
Ireland,
and
with
one
exeeption
the
ac-
tion of De Valera
is
condemned
by
the
newspapers
today,
the
editorials
vavy-
ing
from
hot
denunciation,
to
sorrow-
ful
regret.
The
view
put
forward
in
some.quarters,
that
the
message
to the
Pope
was merely
a
piece
of tactlessness
which should
not be
treated
too
serious-
ly,
was
not
adopted
anywhere
in
the
London
press.
Some
comments
charged
De
Valera
with
‘‘insulting the
King,
the Pope and
his
own
delegates
now in
conference
here,”” and
said
that
he had
removed
the
chanzes
of
peace.
The
“‘Central
News’’
last
evening
issueda
statement
concerning
the
Irish
situa-
tion, which
is regarded
in some
quarters
as possibly
reflecting
the
British Govt’s
views.
The
statement
says that
Mr. De
Valera is ecounting
on the Premiers
anxie-
ty to attend
the
Washington
conference
as
a factor
leading
to
the Governments
becoming
more amenable
to pressure,
he
is making a profound miscalculation,
and
that if the premier
is
not
committed
ir-
revocably to the
journey to Washington,
the
idea
that
he
might
be
induced
