coal
miners
strike,
which
has
been
in progress
sinee
April Ist,
has
been
settled,
it was
oifi-
cially announced
this
afternocon.
Itis
understood
that
Mr.
Lloyd George
will
ask pari:ament
this
afternoon
to author-
ize the
granting
of a ten million. pounds
substitute
to
the
mining
industry
the
miners
wiil
resume
work generally
next
vionday, if the subsidy
is
granted.

subsidy
several
weeks
ago,
but
withdrew
it after
the recent
proposition
by
the
owners for
a seitle-
ment had been
voted
down by the miners
The
general
understanding
is
that
the
submission
of the subsidy
proposition
to
Parliament
is

mere formality and
that
che grant
will be voted.

subsidy

made
available,

assurances
regarding
the allocation
of the
grant,
the scale
of district
wages
reductions
and
guarantees
that
peace
will
be
mairtained,
The
provisional
agreement
which is conditional
upon
the
Govts.
offer of ten
million ponads
being
rene-sed,
provides
that
the
minimum
wage
for
&
sevea
hour day shall
not
be
leas
than 20%
above
the previous
stand-
ard for an eight
hour
day,
with
a divi-
sion
of income
between
wages
and
pro-
fits.
During
the
dispute
1,120,000
tons
of coal have been
imported into England
mostiy
from France
and Belgium, though
America
contributed
325,000
tons.
In
several
other
industries
including
the
engineering
trade
wage disputes
contin-
ue and
ballots
are
being taken
by a large
number
of
men
on
proposals
to accept
wage
reduction.
‘Lhere
is
little
doubt
that the
votes
will be
against
accepting
the proposed
reductions,
but ilt is proova-
ble that negotiations
will be
resumed.
