In
this issue
there
is
reprinted
from
the St. Thomas
Mail Notes
a comment
on
the
sugar
situation
in which
it
is
dis-
closed
that,
as has
nearly
always
been
the
case
in St. Thomas,
sugar
is cheaper
there
than
here where
it is made.
With
reference,
however,
to
that
part of
the
article
to the effect that suraris
selling
here
at
24 cents
a pound,
it
may
fairly
be
stated
that such
has
been
or
is
the
case
in
only
some
isolated
instances

be

sugar
had gone
up in
the
open
market
would
they have
been
so
considerate
as
to give
the consumer
the
benefit
of
the
cheaper
price
at
which
they had bought.
And
all
this
despite
the
faect
that there
is a‘Food
Commis-
sion,
so-cailed.

The sale
of tne machinery of

Sugar JFactory
is authoritatively
denied.
A soaking shower
of rain fell here
yes-
terday
between

in
town
and proportionately
in surrounding

try district, although
some
estates
report
no rain whateveir.
Five lines

from
Frederiksted

Ottawa,
October
14th.—The Canadian
Government
has
suspended
the
order
of
the Canadian
Board of Commerce,
is-
sued
on Wednesday
night fixing
twenty
cents
per pound
as
the maximum
price
of
sugar
in
the
Dominion,
pending
a
hearing
before
the
Cabinet on
October
20th
in
Montreal.
Canadian
sugar
re-
finers
are
holding
commitments
valued
at $50,000,000
and
face
a loss that threat-
ens
to destroy the
industry.
According
to President
Drummond
of the
Canadian
sugar
refining,
company,
“the
refipers
were
forced
to
acquire
and
hold
large
- 'stocks
of sugar
under Government
or-
der and
are
now
unable to sell,
exoept
at a loss,
due to market conditions
in the
Usited Stateg.=
