Governor Bryan Submits Legislation Strengthening the VI Uniform Prevention and Remedies for Human Trafficking Act

US VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has submitted legislation to the 35th Legislature to strengthen, fund and further the purposes set forth in the Virgin Islands Uniform Prevention and Remedies for Human Trafficking Act.

The legislation amends Title 14 of the Virgin Islands Code, Chapter 3A, to add a new Section 133a, which addresses mandatory reporting, to amend Section 147 to authorize the Attorney General, on behalf of a victim to pursue a civil action for compensatory damages and appropriates $11M obtained from the sale of Little St. James to implement and maintain the purpose of the Virgin Islands Uniform Prevention and Remedies for Human Trafficking Act.

The new legislation identifies those individuals who are mandated to report suspected human trafficking, what constitutes a failure to report, and outlines the procedure that is to be followed to report suspected human trafficking.
