May 24, 2024 2024 - 05 FIRST AVENUE DRAINAGE AND ROAD REPAIRS U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS - The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works (DPW) advises the community of an upcoming drainage improvement project along First Avenue, St. Thomas. This project focuses on removing and replacing storm drainage systems and rehabilitating the entire roadway along First Avenue. On Tuesday, May 28, DPW Contractor -- Island Roads Corp. -- will mobilize onsite in preparation for the first block of road work, which is expected to begin the following day. This project will be divided into 9 work zones, representing each block. Contractors will first close Work Zone 1 - between 9th and 10th Street. (See the map for more details.) All traffic traversing from Rumer Drive will be directed onto 10th Street and back down 9th Street. Also, motorists traveling East on First Avenue will be diverted onto 8th Street. DPW hosted a public town hall on Wednesday, May 15, to share project details with residents of the area. Construction on this project is expected to be completed within one year. During the project’s duration, there will be no parking allowed in the designated work zone. Safe designated walkways for pedestrians and access for residents to enter their driveways will be accommodated. The department is urging motorists to adhere to all safety controls and directives from on-site flaggers throughout this reconstruction period.
