CARRIER PIGEONS
AID FORESTERS.
During the recent
severe
forest fires in’
certain
sczetions
of
the
West,
cacrier
pigeons
were
successfully
employed
to
convey
messages
from fire fighters
"‘at
the front’’ to
headquarters.
The
test of
the
birds for this
use
was
on
a
limited
scale
but has encouraged
the
Forest
Ser-
vice
officials to
belicve
that they cin
be
employed profitably
on
a larger scale.
The experiment
lends
special
in erest
to
a plan
which
1s
being considerel
for
co-operation
between
the Departmeat
of
Agriculture
and
the Navy
Departinent,
under
which
the
ecarrier
pigeons
and
equipment of the
latter department
may
become
availaole.
To esrablish
a
sue-
cessful
carrier
pigeon
system
it wiil be
necessary
to lay plans
during the coming
winter,
to have
the posts properly located,
and
g.t the birds
acclimated
and
begin
tieeir training.
Flights
of 600 miles in a-
- day have
been
made,
while a
dis-
tance of 140 to
200 miles means
a two
or
three
hour flight for the
average
bird.
Since the distance
which would be cver-
ed
in Forest
Service work are
coasider-
ably
less than
this there
appears
to
be
no
difficulty in
this
regard.
In
most
instances
the
flights from fire fighting_
headquarters
would be considerably
less
than
50
miles.
The
value of the
dirds
would be particularly
great in mountain-
ous
regions
where
travel
is
diffeult.

system

Mississippi,
thrcugh
its 15 banks,
last
year
lent

to the boy and
girl
club
members
of the
State.
This
spring
the president
of this system
told
the
State
boys’
club agent
that
out
of
these
loans,
a thousan!
in numbér,
there
had
not been
a singic p 2ce
of bad
paper.
Mary
of the boys
were
tae
sons of
men
who could not get eredit
ac a.bank.
The
boys
and
girls
in
Mississippi
borrowed,
in all,
during th>
year
1913,
$40,000 from the
banks
to purchase
seed
eorn,
pure-bred
pigs,
calves,
and
other
live stock,
and so far as is known,
every
loan
has
been
repaid.
The
banks
in
Kansas
lent the
javenile
elub
members
of tt.at State
$75,000 last year with which
to
carry
on
their elub
work.
and
were
ready
to loan more if it had been needed.
The
members
of the
boys’
and
girls’
clubs,
which
are organized
by the
De-
partnent
of Agrieulture
and
the
State
colleges,are
taught
by
their
leaders
to
look upon these obligations
as sacred
and
