Re: Western Auto Site Investigation-March, 1993.
Dear Sir,
I am submitting another*report on the continuing site investigation
on the contents and location of suspected underground tanks
formerly operated by the Western Auto Store located at Four Winds
Plaza, #392 Anna's Retreat, St Thomas.
This site investigation proceeded utilizing similar investigative
methods and quality control/quality assurance as described in my
letter of Nov. 28, 1992:
As you recall, a sample analysis from Tank #2 near the rear of the
Western Auto facility and other samples in the same batch revealed
apparently high trichloroethene (TCE) levels. 
The anomalous
analysis results did not match other sampling results obtained from
the same area but from different sampling events. I resampled the
tank on March 12, 1993 and had EPA analysis 601/602 performed. I
am reporting those contaminants found above detectable levels. The
results of the analysis were as follows:

No chlorinated hydrocarbons were found above detectable levels.
These results conform much more closely with analysis of other
aqueous and non-aqueous samples taken in and around the area. 
I
suspect laboratory or other error caused the anomalous results. I
plan on performing more sampling to verify this latest analysis.

In summary, I would not utilize the analysis indicating high levels
of TCE for any evaluation or action at the site. Other sampling
events from the same location did not indicate TCE contamination
nor were there indications of associated or breakdown products
normally found with TCE. Future sampling and analysis will confirm
the latest analysis.
As discussed in our informal meeting at Four Winds earlier this
year, I will keep your office informed of all discoveries and
information as it becomes available.
