‘ UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION PURPOSE: _ To authorize the closure of the Bachelor of Arts Degree Program in Caribbean Studies. Upon motion duly made and seconded, the following Resolution was adopted by the members of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands: WHEREAS, the University has engaged in a period of program review and assessment as part of its program rationalization process; and WHEREAS, the outcome of this process has been the recommendation that the program leading to the Bachelor of Arts in Caribbean Studies be closed; and WHEREAS, it has been determined that there is only one student currently enrolled in the program and that adequate arrangements will be made for the student to complete the program.; and WHEREAS, the need for education in this field of study will be met (1) through an improved freshman year program which will include two courses with Caribbean and interdisciplinary foci that will be a common experience for all entering freshmen, and (2) through the selection of courses that will be developed as part of a revised general education curriculum; and WHEREAS, the Division of Social Sciences, through its Chair, forwarded a report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs recommending that the program be closed; and WHEREAS, the Vice President for Academic Affairs presented to the President’s Cabinet a report recommending the closure of the program and obtained the approval of the Cabinet; and WHEREAS, the President endorses and recommends to the Board of Trustees that the B.A. degree program in Caribbean Studies be closed; be it RESOLVED, THAT the Board of Trustees approves the closure of the Bachelor of Arts degree program in Caribbean Studies effective immediately.
