Report on prevalence of infectious 
diseases 
. 
Yokohama, Japan, August 17, 1898. 
Sir : I have the honor to forward herewith my regular report of 
infectious diseases in Japan for period July 28 to August 16, inclusive. 
In so doing I beg to call your attention to the increasing preva- 
lence of epidemic dysentery, which is now general throughout Japan, 
with the exception of a few provinces. The mortality is, however, so 
far, low as compared with that of the same disease during the last few 
years, approximating 13 per cent only. 
As regards the prefecture of Kanagawa, in which Yokohama is situ- 
ated, dysentery is at present far more severe than, I think, it has ever 
been before, the number of cases being at least four times as many as at 
the corresponding period of last year's severe and general outbreak. 
Yokohama itself is fortunately 
comparatively free from the malady, an 
exemption which is no doubt to be credited to its exceptionally good 
water supply. The governor of the Ken, on the 10th instant, issued 
instructions 
to sanitary officials, 
with a circular of advice to the people, 
calling attention to the spread and importance of the epidemic, and
