UVI’s Summer Science Research Symposium 
Set for 1pm on Friday on St. Thomas Campus 
UVI students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public, are invited to attend 
the third Summer Science Symposium, scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, 
August 1, 2008. The symposium will take place in the first-floor conference room 
of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. 
More than 20 students from the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses will present 
the results of their research undertaken this summer. Some of the research 
topics include Coral-Algal-Herbivore Interactions in Reef Ecosystems, Coral Reef 
Ecology and Behaviors, Harvesting Breadfruit Leaf Tea, Heavy Metals and 
Dangerous Hydrocarbons in VI Cisterns, Fouling Release Marine Coating, and 
other interesting local research projects.  The Summer Undergraduate Research 
Experience (SURE), the Summer Sophomore Research Institute (SSRI) and the 
Summer Bridge2Calculus programs are supported by the National Science 
Foundation's HBCU-UP program, the MARC program of the National Institutes of 
Health, and the Jones-Holloway-Bryan Foundation.  
The symposium is organized by UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS)
