Using Eudora Email Charles V. Balch, Spring 96, Version 1.1 Eudora is an Email (Electronic Mail) software brand name. Electronic mail is used to quickly send memo like messages and files between computers that are attached to networks. At UVI, Email is free and, through our local Internet connection, we can communicate all over the world! With appropriate software and a modem, you can receive your mail from home. See the document Dial-In Access for more information on dialing in. Starting Eudora Find and Double Click the Eudora Icon. Your Email Address Your address is unique and automatically recorded for a number of purposes. Do not let others use it! At UVI, Email addresses are in the form FLLLLLL@ UVI.EDU where F is the first letter of your first name and LLLLLL is up to the first six letters of your last name including punctuation (i.e. my Email address is cbalch@uvi.edu). Finding other addresses Finding addresses can be an art. There is no universal Email addressing system or directory. The best way to find an address is to read it in the From section of a message you have received. You can ask a person for their address. At UVI, look up an addresses (and other information) by using the Ph option under the Windows menu of Eudora. There are a number of phone books on the Internet but none are universal. Some address books are found on my UVI Reference page. Sending messages and/or files (attachments) Select New Message from the Message menu or [N]. Type your Email address(es) in the To: area. Press tab or use the mouse to move to the Subject: area. Type a short, descriptive subject heading. The heading is like the title of a paper or book. It should explain the intent of your message. Use CC if you wish. BCC is Blind Carbon Copy (other recipients will not know that Email was sent to this address). You may optionally send files be using selecting the Attach Document option from the “Message” menu while in the attach document area. The default format at UVI is MIME. If possible, request this format when receiving files. Move to the message body area and either type your message or copy and paste it from a word processor (all formatting like bold words and tables is lost). When you are ready to send, select Queue or Send from the Message menu. (Which option you see depends on how your switches have been set - see the switches section). Receiving messages or files Get new mail with the Check Mail under the File Menu. Double click on message(s) that you want to read. If your message has a file attached, you will be asked where you want to save the file. Responding to a message After reading a message, you can respond by selecting Reply from the Message menu. Check the To: area to make see whom will get your message. You may add or delete names. Check and correct the Subject: area. Remove unnecessary parts of the original message body by highlighting and pressing the delete key. Type your response. When you are done, send the message. Deleting old messages Select the message(s) and press the delete key. Mailboxes The Email you have received is in your IN mailbox. The Email you have sent is in you OUT mailbox.
