I
can
say
that
1 will not
voie for
it for several
rausons.
The
first is, it has
been
point-
ed
out that this
island is not
ina
pros-
perous
state.
Even
when
there
vas
a
. fair
price tor sugar
tae
island
cou d
not
produce
sufficient
to
ensure
prosperity
for any
lengih of fime.
There
is
a
pro-
hibi lon
act
which
prevents
the
manu-
{acture
of
the
by-product
of
the
sugar
cane.
In other words,
at
present
all cur
eZys
are
in
ohe
baskaet.
and under
(hese
circumstances
this
island
has
been
very
hard hit.
Everyboldy
seems
to b 2 in debt
and sthrxk
it
very
unfair
to try (o
im-
pose
a new tax
of this
sort
on
this
com-
munity.
Certain
careful
persons
have
manazed
to put by
a few dollar:
for “‘wet
days’’, and
to have
to fall back
upon
this
meagre
saving
to
pay
taxes,
will
tend
to
discourage
thrifty
habits.
The
Ma-
rine
Barracks
is
now
conducting
a post
exchange
and
is comveting
with the
mer-
chants
of
the
islind;
many
of
our
sons
and daughters
are emigrating
from
their
Fymes
as
a result
of
all
these
hardshios
deh
are
now
confronting

conditions
are
allowed
to
continue

certainly
will
“’kill the
goose
that laid
the golden
egg

1921:
“Prior
to
adjournment,

made
a
special
plea that
the Committee
recog-
nize
the
fact
that
this
tax
cude
had
been
pending
for
a
considerabie
peri-
od
of
time,
and
that
tae
Governor
would appreciate
definite
action
before
the
next regular
meeting.
The Chair-
man
o
the
Committee
promised
jthat
they would hold
weekly
meztings
and
woilld prepare
in
writing
a list of the
amendments
that
would
satisfy
the
Municipal Committee
and asked
that
meet
with
the
Committee
before
the
next
regular
meeting
of
the
Colonial
Council,

October,
to
clarify
all
views.
The Committee
adjourned
about
6 p.
m. until
Monday

September.”’
