he

He stipped
from the
guards,

way
to
a
boal,

sailed
across
the
Pacific
to
the Urited
States.
After some
years,
he
came
back
with
a ship and
sailed
away
with those
who bad
been
his
fellow-prisoners.
He
had
not
forgotten
them:
In
the United
States
he
became
noted
as
a
poet
and
novelist.

made
a deep impression.
In
1884 he
wrote
a
sort
of
prophetie novel
“The Kico’s
Men,
in
collaboration
with
others,
and
toid
what
would bappen
in
te reign
of George
V.
‘‘Songs
of
the
Scuthern
Seas’’,
and
‘'Songs
Legends
and Baliads’’,
contain
examples
of pow-
erful poetry.
The
poor

himself
a great writer
