It’s the time of the year for fish frys, calypso and fun. It’s
Carnival! And UVI plans to make a splash with its entries in the
Adults’s and Children’s Parades.
The theme for this year’s Adult’s Parade entry is “Schooling
for the Future.” The troupe will feature varieties of tropical fish.
The Ah We Band will provide music along the parade route.
Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends are encouraged to
join.
The Community Engagement Committee, which organizes
the Adult’s Parade troupe, expects 100 participants for the April
30 parade. It is a bargain, with costumes at $55 for students and
$110 for all others. On-line sign-up is available from the UVI
web page - www.uvi.edu.
Members from UVI’s 4-H Program will participate in the
Children’s Parade on April 29. The theme for the 4-H troupe is
“Marine Life is Alive for Carnival 2005.”
Tee shirts depicting the adult’s troupe are on sale as a
fundraiser. The cotton tee shirts are being sold for $10 (2X and
3X are $12). The shirts can be purchased in the Public Relations
Office in Room 301 of the CA Building, the Student Activities
Office, the Paiewonsky Library, the UVI Bookstores and from
any Community Engagement Committee member.
During the week leading up to the parades, adult troupe mem-
bers will participate in the ongoing Saturday morning Carnival
“Big Jog, Shape Up Walk-A-Thon” on Saturday, April 23. The
Walk-A-Thon includes members from several troupes who will
participate in Carnival 2005 Parades. UVI participants will wear
the UVI “Schooling for the Future” tee shirts.

Representatives from businesses and
government agencies lined the hallways of
the Melvin Evans Center on UVI’s St.
Croix campus for the Annual Career Fair
held on April 6. Just a few feet from the
classrooms where college instruction was
taking place, students were able to network
with potential employers. The students
came prepared with resumes and ques-
tions.
Hedda Finch-Simpson, the campus’
student employment coordinator who or-
ganized the event, said there was a con-
stant flow of students throughout the event.
“The fair was very successful,” Finch-
Simpson said. “There was a lot of student
participation and they asked a lot of ques-
tions,” she said.
About 25 public and private agencies,
businesses and hotels were represented.
April 15 is one of the least anticipated times of the year
for most people – but UVI students helped to make the im-
pending tax-filing deadline less stressful. For one month, ap-
proximately 25 UVI St. Thomas campus students volunteered
at the Internal Revenue Bureau for the Virgin Islands Tax
Assistance Program (VITA). The volunteers were business
students enrolled in UVI’s Tax Accounting course and mem-
bers of the Business Association.
The UVI students volunteered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ev-
ery Saturday over the four-week period, helping individuals to
prepare income tax returns. The students served more than
50 people.
“It was great that the students gave up their Saturdays to
volunteer,” said Business Professor Sharon Simmons, who
spearheaded the effort. “It helped them to really understand
what they were doing in the classroom and understand the
practical aspect of it,” said Simmons, who also organized last
year’s effort.
“I want to thank Mr. Alonzo Brady (from the IRB) for
allowing the students to come in and work with the agency,”
Simmons said.
