ESSAY CONTEST TO MARK THE NATIONAL DAY ON WRITING  
 
The Virgin Islands Writing Project (VIWP), a partnership among the Virgin Islands Department of 
Education, the National Writing Project, and the University of the Virgin Islands, will mark the second 
National Day on Writing on October 20 by sponsoring an essay contest.   
All junior high students, high school students, and UVI students are invited to participate in the essay 
contest on the following topic: 
"Writing and writing competence are essential to the way we live." (NWP) 
Write an essay of a minimum of 500 words on the quotation.   
Contest Rules: 
1. The essays will be judged by a committee of readers from various schools and UVI. 
2. Essays must be typed in blue or black ink, double spaced, 12 font, with one inch margins. 
3. The student’s name should be written on the title page only. Include the name of the school, 
teacher, grade, and a telephone number. 
4. The essays will be graded using the following criteria: 
Focus 
Support 
Organization and Format 
Language Use, Style, and Conventions 
Originality 
5. The first, second, and third place winners in each category will receive prizes, some of which 
will be awarded at the VIWP’s Conference on Literacy on Monday, November  1, 2010. Essay 
winners will be notified by October 29.  St. Croix winners must receive their prizes in person at 
the Literacy Conference.  On St. Thomas/St. John, prizes will be awarded at the November 
meeting of the VIWP.   
6. Essay Deadline:  Essays must be submitted as pdf or doc files via email to: vcombie@uvi.edu.  
All essays must be received by 10:00 p.m. on Monday, October 25, 2010.
