We do not
know that
we
are
called
upon
to comment
upon Father Daily’s let-
ter published
in this issue.
Although ad-
dressed
to the editor of the payer,
the
com-
munication
deals
with
a
matter
in which
we merely acted
as spokesman
for
those
who felt that we had
been
instrumental
in exposing
the
community
to
an
un-
warranted
attack, and
we therefore
refer
the letter
to
the
interested
parties.
In
allusion
however
to
that
part
of
the
article implying that she editorial columns
are
governed
by
any
individual
or
in-
dividuals,
or
voice
the
sentiments
of
any
one
person,
the
reierence
to
sim-
ilarity
in style between
Mr.
Svendsen’s
letcer
and
our
editorial giving this
im-
pression,
we
are
bound
to say
that such
an
idea
is
quite erroneous.
As
a mat-
ter
of
fact
we
do
not
see
the
sim-
ilarity and
father
Daily
does
not point
it
out.
The
conservative
attitude
of
the
‘‘Avis’”’is
too
well
known
locally
to
require
of
any
argument
on
this
score
and
in
the
pr2sent
instance
we
happen
to
know.
that
Mr.
Svend-
sen’s
letters
are tragslaticns
from Danish
while
anish
plays
no
part
in
our
editorial or other notes.

remarked
in
a
recent
correspondence
with Rev. Mayhew, there is in these
dis-
cussions
usually much heat
with no light.
And this isprobably
the ccse
here;
there-
fore we welcome
a cessation
of the hostil-
ty which is kept
up
whi e controversies
last, and would like toassire
all concern-
ed that this paper
has
no
partisan
feel-
ings
whatever
as
regards
the
outcome
of literary or other
contests
that may
ke
carried
on in
its columns.

Oman
has
received
a
lei-
ter from
the Chief
of the
Weather
Bu-
reau
in
San
Juan
stating that
the Chief
of
the Weather
Bureau
in
Washington
proposes
(6
inaugurate
a
system
of
weather
observations
to embrace
all
of
the
islands
and
contiguous
eonasts
of
the Caribbean
Sea.
At
the present
time the
Weather
Bu-
reau
has
an
organized
climatological
service
in Porto
Rico
oniv,
but
deSires
to
extend
this
service,
as
rapidly
as
practicable,
to include
selccted
stations
in
the
Virgin Islands
of
the
United
States
and
in Santo
Domingo
and Haiti,
and
later
to
arranwe
ior
cooperation
with
the
authorities
in the English
and
French
isiands
and
of
C(uba
until
the
entire
area
of the
West
Inaies
is
repre-
sented
in
a system
of daily
observations
of
temperature,
rainfali
and
other
weather
conditions.
Weather
reports
are
now being receiv-
ed at
the
Weather
Lureau
in
San
Juan
from
one
siation
in St.
Thomas,
wkich
is opfrated
by
the
Harbormaster,
and
from
one
in
St.
Croix.
It
is
desired
however,
to
open
-at
least
one
more
station
on
the
island
of
St.
Thomas,
one
on Si.
John,
and
five
or
six
more
staticns
on
the
island
of St. Croix:
The
weather
Bygeau
will furnish
the
necessary
instruinr@und
forms,
and
supervise
tae
work
of
collection
and
publication
of the
results.
As
there
is
no
provision
in
law
for
compensation
of observers
it is
necessary
to
find men
or
women
who are
perscnally
interest-
ed in
the work
to take
up the
duties of
the
observer.
Governor
Oman
will,
as
far
as practicable,
detail from
the
Gov-
ernment
service
as
many
persons
as
can
be
spaved
for this
work,
which
is
so
essential
to
the
inhabitants
of the
Virgin
Islands,
but
offers
of
service
on the part of others
will be solicited.
The
work
to
be
perfecrmed
by
the
weather
observers
is
of
great
import-
ance
to planters,
shipping
men
and resi-
dents
in
general,
and it
is hoped
that
the
public
will freely
cooperate
with
the
Government
in
the
establishment
