The Creole
saiied

this
morning at

o’clock
with
the
regular
mails,
and passengers.
Recently
a
movement
started
in
the
surrounding
district
of
Cordova
among
the
wealthier
people,
to go without hats
and
also
to wear sandals
made
of hemp
in protest against
high prices,
is spread-
ing throughout southern Spain.
Hundreds
have
joined
the
silent
demonstration,
which
is
causing
considerable
perturba-
tion among

We learn
that Estate
Thomas
and
Mi
chelsen
store
have been
bought
by Mr
A. H. Lockhart,
the
formear
for
$60,000
and
the
latter
for $9 000.--St.

This
morning
a littie before
2 o’clock
the town
was
startled
hy the
incessant
ringing
of
bells,
denoting
fire.
Upon
investigation,
the
scene
of
the
confla-
gration
was
found
to be
the store-rnom
of the Bay Rum Establishment
of Messrs
D.
O. Bornn & Sons,
situated
at the rear
of
the
main
building,
and
facing
the
water-front,
in
a south-westerly
direc
tion
I[n
this
store
room,
were
stored
casks
of bay rum. and alcohol,
ete.,
val-
ued at several
hundred
dollars.
The fire
was first
discovered
by
some
of
our
young
gentry
returning
home
from
a dance,
who upon
the strong
scent
of burning wood reaching
their
nostrils,
started
an investigation
with the already
known results.
Shortly
after the first
clanging ot the
bells,
the
Fire
Brigade
with
their
two
Ford fire-engines,
and
a d:tachment
of
marines
under
the command
of Captain
Lowell, also with an
engine
were
on the
scene;
while sub-chaser
No. 72, [?]
un-
der command
of
Lieutenant
Newell, U.
S. N.
hauled
alongside
the
wharf, and
with hydraulic
pumps
assisted
in
the
fizhting of
the flames.
Willing
hands
from
among
the
people
also
rendered
good
an
efficient
service.
The building
whose
roof has
caved
in and
whose
mas-
sive and sheathed
doors
have been
burnt
to cinders
is but
a smouldering
mass
of
ruins,
with jets of flame
from the burn-
ing
debris
spurting
forth,
hither
and
thither,
now
and
anon.
Both the stock
and building,
we
are glad to say,
are
in-
sured,
tbe former with the Sun Insurance
Company,
and
the latter
with
the
Pal-
atine Insurance
Company.
Thanks

as
well
as
to the
nature of
the building destroyed,
the
fire was kept
well within bounds,
and
further
