Dear Ms. Kwan: At the request of Ms. Ana Gloria Ramos, Designated Coordinator for the Tutu Environmental Investigation Committee (TEIC), Geraghty & Miller, Inc. would like to perform three additional soil borings (designated B-14, B-15, and B-16) at the Curriculum Center Building (former LAG A Building). Based upon information developed by TEIC, a metal pipe which extends through the north wall of the building (see Figure 1) may have been a source of tetrachloroethene (PCE) discharge. The three soil borings will be advanced using hollow-stem augers until refusal. Continuous split-spoon samples will be taken at each boring. Each split-spoon will be screened using a HNu photoionization instrument. The sample with the highest HNu reading or visible staining will be selected for laboratory analysis. If no elevated HNu readings are encountered, the soil interval 0 to 6 inches above the bedrock surface or water table (whichever is encountered first) will be selected for laboratory analysis. Each split-spoon soil sample will be sampled for field gas chromatograph analysis. The sampling methodology outlined above and all other associated procedures will be performed in accordance with the project work plan. Because the foundation outlined in Figure TUT 006 1778 201 West Passaic Street, 3rd Floor • Rochelle Park, New Jersey 07662-(201) 909-0700* FAX (201) 909-0567/0568 *64887* 64887 GERAGHTY & MILLER, INC. 2 is under construction, it is important that these borings be completed while the area is still accessible. Based upon our recent telephone conversation, it is our understanding that you do not have any objections to these additional borings. Please call if you have any questions.
