effort
is being
made
by
the
Govt.
to
combat
the bubonic
plague
at
Vera
Cruz.
Or-
ders have been
issued
giving the
sani-
tary
authorities
supreme
power
in
the
city,
dominating
even
that
of military
officers.
Twenty-five
cases
in
all
have
been reported
since
the outbreak
of the
plague
a week ago.
Several other
cases
have
been
reported
from
the
cities
near Vera Cruz.

for
the
America's
Cup,
‘‘Shamrock
IV.”’, had her gaff carried
away
on Sun-
day
while
undergoing
a
testing
spin
off Hempstead
Harbour,
Long
Island.
She proceeded
to City Island for repairs.
The yacht ‘‘Resolute’’ arrived
at
New-
port
from
Bristol
on
Sunday,
ready
to resume
her trial race
with the
*‘Van-
itie’’ on
Monday.
Mexico City, June
7th.—General
Her-
rero
has
arrived
here
to give the Presi-
dent
an
account
of
his
actions
at
the
time
that
President
Carranza
met
his
death.
He
reiterated
his
statement
that
the
late
Mexican
ruler
committed
suicide
owing
to
the
cowardice
of his
companions.
The General asserted
that
with
a force of 80 men
he
attacked
two
hundred
Carranza
followers,
and
that
the Carranza’s
men fled without trying to
defend
their
chief,
who being wounded
and finding himself
deserted,
shot
him-
self.
