the
most
important item in tne agenda.

olution
urges
the Govts,
to
use
their
in-
fluence
to increase
cable facilities and
re-
duce
cable
rates
for
news messages,
and
it
definitely endorses
the
principle
of a
universa!
cable
rate of
one
penny
a word
within
the
British Empire.

All

divisions,

is
under-
stood,

is neing carried
on
vigorously by
the
Insular
Health Depar:-
ment,
and bringing results.
In
the
district
of Utuado,
one
of
the
regions
where
the
most
cases
of
hook-
worm
have
been
found,
a hospital
has
been
erected,
which accommodates
thirty
patients,
and
where
snme
nine
hundred
patients
are
treated
from
this
one
dis-
trict each
week.
The hospital
‘vas built
in order
to make
the
campaign
ag
inst
hookworm
mor2 effective.

Oune
of the encouraging
features
with
regard
to this camgpaign
‘is the fact
that
the
people
are
willing to do
what
they
are
told as
a means
to being cured of the
disease
more
rapidly.

Up to
this
time
three
.thousand
latrines
have been
up
in
this
region,
this
being
one
of
the
first
steps
essential
to the
success
of the
eam-
paign.
Those
who have
not put
up
the
lacrines
have
been
able
to furnish
very
good
excuses
tor their
failure
to

with
the order given
out by the
Insular
Health
Department
The officials of this
department
have
not used
any compulso-
ry
methonds
in
connection
with™the
carrying
out
of
thes. orders,
in
fact,
there
seems
to be
a spirit of
cooperation
on
the part
of the
people which
is
help-
ing greatly
in the progress
of the
cam-
paign.
The
Depariment
hopes
to extend
this
work
to
Larep,
San
Sebastian,
Maricao,
Adjuntas
and
Jayuya,
anda physician
who is comin®
to Porto
Rico
to represent
the Rockefeller
Instirute
will take
charge
of the
work
once
the sanitary
and initial
work
1s completed.

legisiative
body avpropriated
the
sum
of
$300,000
at its
last
session,
for
this specific work, and
while
the amount
is
by
no
means
adequate
to the
needs,
the
Insular
Health Department
is deter-
mined
to
doits best
with the
funds
in
hand
to
wipe
out
hookworm
in
Porto
Rico.

control of malaria
and
the
elimination
of the
hookworm.
The
southern
part
of
the
United
States,
Mexico. Centrul
America
and the North-
ern countries
of Sonth
Ameriea,
lie with-
in
the malaria
belt, and
President
Vin-
cent
said
that
malaria
is
threaiening
$8,000,000
people
within that area.
