WHEREAS, Mario Alfredo Thomas is a dedicated educator and public servant,

who has contributed thirty-three years of service to the people of the Virgin Islands in the

field of Physical Education; and



WHEREAS, Mario Alfredo Thomas was born on the island of St. Thomas on

October 20, 1938 to Mrs. Rhynita Sprauve Thomas and Robert Zeland Thomas; and



Whereas, Mario Alfredo Thomas began his formal education at the Pastory



Elementary School on the island of St. John; and

Whereas, Mario Alfredo Thomas graduated from Charlotte Amalie High School

in 1958 and four years later graduated from Philander Smith College, Little Rock,

Arkansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree; and



Whereas, Mario Alfredo Thomas has been instrumental in securing scholarships

for both baseball players and track and field athletes; and



Whereas, even though Mario Alfredo Thomas has retired, he continues to

volunteer his services to the University of the Virgin Islands by organizing a cross

country team to compete in the NCAA; and



Whereas, Mario Alfredo Thomas married his beloved sweetheart, Emma

Fredricks on July 20, 1959, and they are proud parents of Mario Thomas, Jr., Kendall

Thomas, Candace Thomas, Coleen Thomas and Maureen Thomas; and



Whereas, all of Mario Alfredo Thomas’ children have obtained college degrees;

and



Whereas, Mario Alfredo Thomas should have a monument erected in his honor

that reflects his commitment and dedication to track and field development in general and

to the Charlotte Amalie High School track and field program in particular; NOW,

THEREFORE,



BE IT ENACTED by the Legislature of the Virgin Islands:

SECTION 1. The track and field facility at the Charlotte Amalie High School,



under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education, shall henceforth be named the

ONOOaAAWHND =



“Mario Alfredo Thomas Track and Field Complex” as a lasting tribute to Mario Alfredo

Thomas from the people of the Virgin Islands

SECTION 2. The Department of Education shall cause to be prepared a sign



bearing the inscription “Mario A. Thomas Track and Field Complex”.Such sign shall be



conspicuously affixed in a permanent location in the track at the Charlotte Amalie High



School.
