Dealer Temporary Tag Rules & Reminders 
Per 20 V.I.C. § 336 
• 
Only licensed dealers can apply for temporary plates. 
• 
Plates are valid for 30 working days (excluding weekends and legal holidays). 
• 
Only one temporary plate is required and must be attached to the rear of the vehicle. 
• 
Temporary tags must be returned to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) when regular license plates are 
issued. 
• 
Once a temporary tag is issued to a vehicle, the tag issuance information must be submitted to the BMV 
within 24 hours using the official Tag Issuance Form. 
• 
The completed Tag Issuance Form must also be sent to the BMV Director and the Police Commissioner. 
• 
Misuse of temporary tags may result in the immediate surrender of all unused temporary plates and loss 
of plate privileges for one year.
