There
appeared
in yesterday’s
issue
of
the Avis,
a cablegram
dated London Sept.
27th.,
to the effect that Adelina Patti
(Ba-
roness Cederstrom/,
the Prima Donna, had
died that morning
at Caig
y
Nos,
South
Wales.
The
name
of this world renown-
ed
singer-is
probably
familiar to
most
readers,
and
it would
seem
a
slight if
some special
mention
were
not
made
of
her remarkable
career
in
the
pursuit
of
Apollo’s art.

mains

for Bt Thomas.
The
first joint of
the

water supply
system
for King’s Quarter

was then
laid on the
hillside of H)spital

Ground.
This system
primarily intended

for supplying
salt
water for
a
sanitary

flushing
system,
and
for
fire
protection
.
for King’s Quarter,
will form
a unit for
a8
complete
fresh
water
supply
should

funds
become
available
in
the
future

for such
a
purpose.
The
water
mains,
'
now
being laid,
will forma
portion
of
'
the
net
work
which
will
ultimately

serve
the whole
of Charlotte Amalie.

The
33.000 gallon
reinforced
concrete
|
storage
tank,
on
the. heights
north
of
|
the
Municipal Hospital,
is nearing
com
f
pletion.
It
is 270
feet above
sea
level
|
and
will, therefore,
give
enough
pres-
|
sure
in the
water
mains
to
ileach
any
|
house
in King’s
Quarter,
thereby
af-
|
fording
that
section
with
an
excellent
|
protection
against
fire.

tank

structed

as to fit In as

the elevation
being

provide
ample
pressure

north-eastern
shore
of
Grega-
rie
Channel
a Municipal Abattoir is
now

being
constructed.
The building is
pro-
vided with sanitary
concrete
floors
and
walls,
and
is
SSO
construc‘ed
as
to
pro-
vide
for
easy
‘cleanirg
and
washing
dewn.
The
importance
of the
erection
of this
slaughter-house
from a
sanitary
point.
of view, is, realized
when
centrali-
zaiion
oi
slaughtering
in
St.
Thomas
is
thus
made
possivle.
As
a
conse-
quence
thereof,
means
will thereby
be
provided
for
a
thorough
inspection
of
cattle
on hoof,
of
the
dressed
animal,
and
the methods
us#d
in butchering.
A
10.000
gallon
reinforced
concreie
tank has recently
been
practically
com-
pleted
at the Municipal
Hospital,
to
pio-
vide fresh
water storage
for the sanitary
plumbing
system
now
being
insialle|
throughout
the buildings
of the
hospital.
All the piping and
most of the
plumbiny
fixtures
have
been
installed,
and
the
completion of the sysrem
is only awaiting
the arrival ofa few remaining fixtures and
other supplies
from
the
States.
Upon
comy letion of this
instaliation
the
Muni-
cipal Hospital will be thoronghly equipoed
with
necessary
shower
baths,
toilets,
sinks,
ete.,
which
will greacly
facilitate
the work of caring for the patients.
A new laundry is also nearing
comple-
tion at
the
Municipal
Hospital.
whica
will provide
a large wash
room,
a stora
room,
and
an
ironing room,
and
it
wiil
fill a long felt need
at the hospital.
Herc-
tofore, the laundry
work of the
hospital
has
been
done
at the well in
the
ecenter
of the
yard.
Taoe
building
is
equipped
with six modern
cement
laundry
tubs,
each
of whieh
is provided
with
runninge
water.
The recent
repainting of all
the
build-
ings of
the Municipal Hospital
has
add-
ed
decidedly
te
the
appearance
of
the
institution.
I'Lat,
together
with
the
various
other
improvements,
such
as
concrete
floors
in
the
insane
asylum,
new
concrete
storeroom,
ete.,
has
ful-
filled long felt needs
of lthe
hospital.
