Description 
The Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program 
promotes excellence in careers leading to a Ph.D. in Biomedical 
Science, Psychology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Marine 
Biology. The MARC Research Traineeship Program is highly 
selective and funded by a grant from the National Institutes of 
Health (NIH). ECS Scholars supported by MARC must be 
interested in a career in biomedical research, work closely with 
faculty mentors on research projects, complete a challenging 
curriculum, and fulfil specific responsibilities as determined by the 
program. 
Eligibility 
To be a MARC trainee, a student must: 
 
 
Be enrolled full time at UVI  as Junior or Senior 
 
Have a GPA of 3.0 or above. 
 
Be a US citizen or permanent resident 
 
Major  in mathematics, chemistry, biology, marine biology, 
computer science, or psychology 
 
Be interested in a career in biomedical research  
 
 
Benefits 
The benefits of being a MARC trainee include: 
 
$3,000 scholarship towards tuition and fees; 60% of costs over 
$3,000 are also paid 
 
A monthly competitive stipend 
 
Work with the mentor on research project; supplies provided 
 
Travel to scientific meetings (must present at ABRCMS) 
 
Special workshops to help in applying to graduate schools and 
special summer programs 
 
Funding to work with off-island mentors during the summer
