Proceeding
down King
Street,
the
main
highway
inte
town,
and formerly called
Great King Street,
in the days
when
small
things
were big things of long ago,
we
see
upon
our right the Moravian Church occupying
an elevated
situation
on
a choice
build-
ing
location.
The
site
is
named
Fredensthal
and
so
namzd
by
that heroic band of
Missionaries
whose
only object
and
aim
of settling here
was
to carry
the c¢hristian
re-
ligion to the slaves.
They
came
to the island
even
in
advance
of the landing and
occu-
pation of the Danish
Officials by
special
permission,
first
with the object of selecting
the most healthy locations
for
their missionary
houses
in the island,
and secondly
and
rather principally to be prepared
to do
their gond work
as
soon
as
the expected
slaves
were introduced.
'T'hat body
ever since
has
been
known
and respecied
for their great
industry,
at that
time it
was
an
orderly
body
of men
and
women
from Germany; but
for quite sometinie
past
the
Missionaries
here
have
been
controlled
by the Govarning
Body from Bethlehem,
Pa.
The
good
princioles
of
this
Sact
is
very entertainiogly
described
by Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography
as
a result
of
a
visit to their
set-

@ nent i) Bethlenem
in 1755.
He there
speaks
of -heir unique
.system
of housing and
living conditions,
their separation
{of sexes,
their education
and living and
their system
of
contracting
marriage
by
drawing
of
lots
superintended
by
the Elders
in charge.
Duringthe days prior to and during the Revnlutionary
War
a writer found in that
town
and under
their control
a
tavern
with
exceilent
board
and accommodation,
very com-
fortably arranged
for 150 guests,
the equal of
which did not exist at that time through-
out
the whole country.
Most taverns
of those
days
were
calied '‘Ordinaries’” and
or-
dinary they were indeed,
tor
the
landlords
thouzht
that
as
long as their tables
had
a
sumptuous
suppbly
of
food
and
wines
it
matters
not
wh:re
the traveller siept.
The
Moruviars
theretore
in their methodical
life led
the
way
to
good tavera keepiag
by
the
example
tney set
by providing for the traveller, for the
rest
of
the b)dy
as well as
the
nourishment
of it, and rhey
may, therafore,
be
considered
the
pivneers
of
good
hotel
keeping
1n the
United States.
The
Mission
here
is still actively
carried
on as
a church
unde* the changed
conditions of today for which they
praise
God,
as
their ministiations
are
not
as
necessary
as when they
first
settled
here,
back
in
the
first
days of the
is-
11nd’s s:ttlement
under
the rule of Denmark,
though,
the
Company’s
Officials were the
wovernors
(o
all intents
and
purposes.

not
become
a Royal Colony
until
1754,
