RESOLUTION



PURCHASE OF EQUIPMENT FOR JOURNALISM PROGRAM

(Board of Trustees Meeting, June 9, 1985)



WHEREAS the Journalism program was introduced at the

College to produce qualified Virgin Islanders for positions in

journalism locally and throughout the Caribbean.



WHEREAS the College is committed to the continued finan-

cial support of this program.



WHEREAS instructional resources and equipment for the

program are very limited, and there exists a critical need to

provide state-of-the-art equipment to upgrade the Journalism

program and to help it meet its program objectives.



NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the President and

Vice-President for Business and Financial Affairs be authorized

to appropriate the sum of $30,000 from the Educational Resources

Reserve Fund for the purchase of instructional equipment for

the Journalism Program.



CERTIFICATION



The undersigned does hereby certify that the foregoing

is a true and exact copy of a resolution of the Board of Trustees

of the College of the Virgin Islands adopted at its meeting on



June 9, , 1985, as recorded in the minutes of



said meeting.

Justification for Purchase of Journalism Equipment yi,



The journalism program was initiated with financial support

from the Gannett Foundation, which publishes the Daily News. The



purpose of the program is to produce qualified Virgin Islanders

for positions in journalism locally and throughout the Caribbean.

Graduates of the program would compete initially for positions at

the entry (reporter) level, and could anticipate opportunities for

advancement. There is a shortage of local talent for positions in

this field.



The equipment purchased as a result of this action will make

possible the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment for instruc-

tion in journalism. A type-composition system will be acquired,

including video-display terminals, a photo-typesetter, and a hard-

copy printer. This system will eliminate the present practice of

utilizing the equipment of local businesses when the equipment

happens to be free, with the attendant problems of scheduling,

>~ missing deadlines, and damage to the enthusiasm of faculty and



students engaged in newspaper composition and production.



With no more than the manual typewriters now on hand as train-

ing tools, it is clear that the College must upgrade its equipment

if graduates are to be fully qualified and competitive in the job



market.



Successful development of this-program offers the prospect

of new careers for CVI students, as well as the additional pro-

spect of helping to assure a free press in the Caribbean.
