for
an
instance.
There
we have
an island
whose
inhabi-
tants
depend wholly
upen
the coaling
of
steamships
eailing there for
their
means
of livelihood.

Apart from
that,
there
is
no other
in-
dustry
oy means of agriculture
suppori-
ing the
masses.
There
was
a
lime
‘vhen
a visit from
an American battleship
meant
thousands
of dollars in cireulation
on the island.
Those
whe did not

in
the laundry business,

ven
ot
all kinds sold their goods
at a remaikable
profit.

the
winter
months,
teurists
from Burope
and America flocked to
St.
Thomas
and spent
money freely.

steamships
are
going
for
their eoal
and water
up to Barbados,
St.
Lucia,
and
other
British
West
Indian
ports
where liguor ean be bought.
If
the
islands
had
remained
undexr

have been
a boom for them,
just
as
it has proved
to be for the
Bermudas
and the Bahamas.

British Islands

juice intended
for them

Thomas.

manufacture
of rum in
St. Croix
and the sugar
industry
almost
paralyzed
ought
to give
the few
reformers
there
something
to
worry
about,
since
tihis
situation
threatens
their pocketbook
just
the
same.

course
we
do
agree
that
saloons
could
be avoided,
since it has proved
‘o
be
detrimental
to the
ciass
that the
is-
land reformers seek
to protect.
Respect-
able
citizens
never
visited
the
saloons
or rum shops.
It is also well that the spirit of
teeg-to-
talism
exists
for the
good of humanity
but
humanity
has
no
thanks
to
offer
when it is being starved
in the bargain.
