I§?IS Resource Planning & M a n a g e m e n t FISHERIES The SOCIO-ECONOMIC SURVEV Of VI RECREATIONAL BOATING AND HSHING (80pp., 67 tables) was completed for the National Marine Fisheries Service. A parallel supporting effort to quantify recreational catch efforts (species, fre quency, method) is currently being car ried out. CARIBBEAN A preliminary survey report, ENVIRONMENTAL including program develop- PROGRAMS ment options for the Carib bean, was submitted to the US National Commission for UNESCO/MAB 7B Directorate. Recommendations included a strategy 1) to define an oil spill con tingency project for small Caribbean is lands and2) to develop plans for a re gional workshop on "Environmental Manage ment and Economic Growth" in the smaller Caribbean islands. Both options are now being carried forward with IRF assistance. OPEN SPACE STEWARDSHIP PLANNING Under a contract with the Nature Conservancy and fol lowing appropriate site sur veys, IRF developed an "open space land use plan" for a 167 acre par cel of land at Bugby Hole, St. Croix, a critically important environmental re source on a small island with a history of intensive land use. NATURAL The Foundation's president pre- AREA sented two papers at a May workshop PLANNING in Tobago on Natural Area Planning, the first paper deal ing with CHAR ACTERISTICS OF ISLAMP RESOURCES and the se cond on the subject of CARIBBEAN MARINE RE SOURCES. The regional workshop was spon sored by the Caribbean Conservation Associ ation, School of Natural Resources, U. of Michigan and the Forestry Division of Trinidad and Tobago. SURVEY OF CONSERVATION PRIORITIES Under a consultancy from the Eastern Caribbean Na tural Area Management Pro gram, IRF is participating in a survey/mapping effort to determine priorities for an integrated natural areas management system. The Foundation has as sumed responsibility for Anguilla and is assisting in the British Virgin Islands. Education and Technical Assistance CAREER The 12-part television series EDUCATION TR00LS-- "Tools and Rules for Careers in the Virgin Islands" — has been completed, covering such di verse career areas as communications, transportation, health, services, com merce, and others. The video-tapes and accompanying teacher's guide will be made available to the VI Department of Education. With funding support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, IRF has provided small scale tech nical assistance, counsel, and related project planning services to: SMALL ISLAND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE * ANTIGUA- development planning for a "cultural park", historic sites, and museums * BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS - development of management strategies and legislation for marine parks and protected areas * ANGUILLA - planning for marine resource development, including marine parks and fisheries * DOMINICA- national park planning, in cluding development of a major his toric site within the park * ST. KITTS - feasibility and development planning for Brimstone Hill * GRENADA - preparation of gui delines for a national museum system and cultural development program. NUTRITION A continuing program of community EDUCATION outreach efforts in the area of nutrition education will culmi nate with a projected Community Conference on Food and Nutrition, to be held in the fall and to include West Indian regional and U.S. mainland participants. COMMUNITY Current efforts under this ENVIRONMENTAL federally funded project EDUCATION (VI) focus on direct assistance to community organizations to help these groups develop action pro grams in areas of environmental concern, implementation of the Environmental Hotline alert system for the VI, and planning for community workshops and forums on coastal zone management and comprehensive plan ning.
