St. Thomas is a small island near Puerto Rico. The 
island covers an area of 33 square miles, and before the 
abolition of slavery, was covered with prosperous sugar 
plantations. It was originally colonised by the Dutch, was 
in British hands from 1807 to 18x5, and now belongs to 
Denmark.
