whereby
the
said
subject
being
again
accorded
a place in
the
discussions
of
‘‘Matters
Important
and Pressing’’'—the
minds
of some
men
b=come
opened
up to
certain possibilities
in connection
therewith,
which
previous-
ly
escaped
the
consideration
oi
other
men:
and
thus
we
find
that,
in
the
world’s
history,
many
long postponed

more
or
less
stupend-
ous
noture
--some
too
that,

been
virtually set
aside,
as
was
thought,
per-
manently —have
been,
chiefly
owing
so

resolute

determined

launched

thorough

of Caristiansted
need
not
therefore
be

possibility
of complétely
removing
the
obstacle
at the
antrance
to
their
harbor;
namely:
a small
part of a sand
and
coral
reef—has

made

pretendedly-
interested
friends

a

and

an

to that
effect

circulated

It is well kpawn
that
among
the so-called
‘‘lnterested
Movers’’ in the
sham-experimenting
mode,
that
there
were
many
who had neither
the
will nor
the
desire
to
sincerely
attempt
the
ac-
coraplishment
o
tue
end
in view.
The Managing
Agents
of
the Raporel
Line steamers,
who persistentiy
send their
ships
into our port,despite{he hue and
ery
raised
against
the (greatly
azgravated)
difficu t entrance
thereto,
deserve
all the
encouragement
and
facilities
we can
af-
ford
them,
and
ais»
ourse
ernal
grati-
tude,
coming
as thev
continually do with
even
so small
a ecargo
as under fifty tons,
demonstrating
in
no small degree the fact
that though our brethren
agthe
other end
refer to our harbor
as
“‘only a pond’’ yet
those
difficulties
they
also
must
know
are
remediable,
and
the
facilities good
and capable
of improvement;
whilst with
them
their
open
roadstead
must
natur-
ally ever
remain
just
the.same,
and
be
subjecr
and exposed
as
it was
this month
and oft
before
to
southerly
winds
and
high
seas
which
make
their
so-¢
lied
harbor
impossible of use
for days.
On
the
other
hand.
a-
Christiansted,
there
is only, what
th: skiil and ingenui-
ty of
man
with
the
necessar:
marine
engineering
knowledge
can
remedy
at
any
time
that
the
real
disprsition
and
help
of
a
benevolent
enterprising
Gov-
ernmen(
assisted
by
the
cooperation
of
hearty
and
true
citizens,
men—not
men
of
straw—but
men
of
strong
busineS§s
minds
and
talents—may
perform.
It was asserted
as
a
finale
in the effort
to
which allusion

here
made—that
no
funds
were
forthecoming
noy
guarantees
possible
to
meet
the
high
cost
of
the
““Harbor
opening’’—this
was
done
as
the
last
blow
to
finish
up
and
cap
the
question.

be of general
benefit

surroundings,

even
the

part of the Island, for be it
well remem-
bered
and
kept
in mind that
the scenery
around
those
upper
lands
and hilltops,
is
second
to
none
in
the West Indies,
the
healthy
concition
aiways
of St.
Croix
js
.
no
commendation
that
we
need
to
beg
-for.
Americans
like more,
than
all other
people
of
the Globe
to keep
tootting
it
over,
and
why
so; they
seek
for
health
.
resorts,
and
care
not where
they be,
so
long as they
can
reach
tham.
Give them
a
iine
harbour
toadd
to
whai
we
ean
now
boast
01,
and
they
will
come
and
some-vill
stay and
some of the thousand-
aires,
it not
even
millionaires,
may
stop
and
now
that
the
land
is
theirs,
thev
assist
in develeoping
some
of our sleeping
resources
and
thus
make business,
trade
and
increase
commerce,
where
without
a
harbor
irprovement
we
will
ever
remain
as our
forefathers,
grovelling
in

the dust
of despondeacy
until
we become
eternally
and
inextricable
covered.

is your
beautiful

you
must
make
an effort
on your part
it you want
to do
yourself
good

Americans,
you
must
show
vourself
to have grit and
then his help
is
coming.
He
hates
drones
and
sl
eply
headed
people.
They
ecould
not

made

Advanced
and
Advancing
Peo-
ple that they
are today
if grit was
want-
ing.
He will help
to make
our
harbor
a
thoroughly weli-opened
up
and complete
one
if we
urge
upon
him
the
absolute
necessity
for doing so,
both for his honor

credit
as
well
as for
your prosperty
and welfare, and
you will find as you
are
bound
to that there is
no failure
on
our
expgetations
when
we
extended
our

Uncle Sam
