This island is one of Ihe Caroline group, north of Australia, seiz ed from Germanv by Japan, and whi- it is alleged the latter nation will hoid under the terms of the Peace reaty. One of the most interesting facis about the island of Yap, is the form of money used by the natives, which con- gists of large, flat, circular stones, with a hole in the middle, resembling an old- ifzshioned American grindstone. These stones are quarried in the Pellow Islands and carried over to Yap, on large rafts. Each man’s wealth, as it is acquired, is simply piled against the wall of his house where it remains unmolested by his neighbor. A stone in Yap weighing 500 pounds will buy a pig. while it takes a stone weighing 1,000 pounds to purchase a wife —a wife considered twice the value of a pig. Ornaments worn by the natives such as beads and brass rings may be bought with stones weighing from 100 pounds or more. There is little com- merce on the island. Bananas and other food are so plentiful that evechange of this nature is unnecessary and beyond a string or two of beads the clothing problem is unknown.—Everyday Life. | Juggs —I say. do you think Binksisa man to be trusted?
