The Vice-Chairman: DoI understand that the proposal of the Honorable Ist Member for Frederiksted Country Dis- trict is, that the law be sent back to Government for revision along the lines suggested by the Committee? Ist Member for Frederiksted Country District (Andersen) answered the Vice Chairman and said, —I do not know whe~e the e2de comes from now, whether from Government or the Medical Department; if it is rrom the Medical Department it should be referred back to them. 2nd Appointed Member (Noll) remark- ed: While Iappreciate the remarks of the last speaker, I do not think «anything will be gained by his proposal. [ stili think it would be better tfor this Dr. ft to go back to the Committee in conjune- tion with the Medical Department for recommendation as to what should be laid,before this Counci!, but I don’t think any thing will be gained by sending it back to the person by whoi it was dralt- ed. If I were the one who dratted the reguiations, I would be loth to make any changes, particularly as | have no re- commendations from any committee. Ist Member for Frederiksted Country District (Andersen) remarked: Mr. Vice- Chairman. When 1 spoke just now 1 understood that the Medical men were aware of the concensus of opini- on in this island. We have had many meetings on the code and the Doctors wer: present and I don’t believe that they are ignornant of what the concen- sus of the opinion of the Committee was. Ist Member for Christiansted Country District (Stakemann) remarked: Mr. Vice-Chairman. [ dec not believe that it is within the power of the Coloniz! Coun- cil to return the draft; as a legislative body we can reject or send it to a com- mittee to report on it, but according to the Rules of Business we cannot send it back to the person by whom it was draft- ed. therefore I agree to send it to a com- mittee. I think it would be a ST LRt AV 1S good idea to have it passed apon by a cominittee, to see if we can have it changed so as to facilitate and not retard business. 2nd Member for Frederiksted Country District (M. M. Skeoch) remarked: Mr. Viee-Chairman. Why not elect the nine members who have already discussed the law, it would_ be much better, parti- cularly as tH®y have already been objec- tion to certain parts of it. If you elect seven new members it would change the features of the whole thing. The Vice-Chairman would like to know if the proposal made by the last specker meant to refer the code of laws to the nine members previously appointed to consider it” 2nd Member (or Frederiksted Country Distriet (M. M. Skeoch) answered yes. The Vice-Chairman put the member’s proposal to the vote. - It was unanimously adopted. The Vice-Chairman remarked: The Honorable 2nd Appointed Member’s pro- posal falls to the ground. The code of laws will be referred back to the Com mittee of 9 Members previously appointed to consider and report upon it. The Vice-Chairman remarked: Before giving a recess I wish to ask Members to vote on the question of the election of a member to serve on the KEducational Board of Review. In reference to what we wrote vester day as regards comparison of prices ob taining in Antigua and St. Croix, it may be remarked that it is ot in every gro- cery that one is confronted with the ex- horbitant prices so generaily prevalent, and this is what makes the situaticn all the more remarkable, and sets the sus picion of people tingling Can we hon estly blame anyone because he feels him- self cheated, or overcharged if that term is preferred, when in one grocery pota- toes cost him 6 cents and in another 1U cents? No, no reasonable being could squarely deny that something is radical- ly wrong there. We have it on the best authority that potatoes cost in thg States $4.50 a barrel of 170 pounds or so. With the freight this article must cost some- thing around 3 cents « pound ; sold at 6 cents thereis a conspicious profit of 100%; at 10 ecents, more than 300%. Cheese is shown to be sold at 267 cheaper in for- eign islands than here; and s 0 on in ma- ny other things and in other lines, in- clnding dry goods. It is well to let those handling these things at least know that the public is fully alive to the manner in which they are gouged. In many cases fair and square dealers are doing what they can to remedy the market and force others to give the consumer a square deal, and wherever we learn of their activity in this direction, it gives us real pleasure to make it known. Upon read- ing our note of yesterday Mr. Pretto ad- vised us that he has been selling cheese at 60 cents since last week. And Mr. Mclntosh has been doing the same. M. Pretto has come out with an ad. in this issue, LOCAL. The Antigua Sun of August 11, 1920 publishes the Food (‘ommission’s price of live goats at 3d. per pound. Here again 6 cents against our tweive.
