Its bad enough trying to understand what’s going on when people call things by their right name but computer folks seem to love acronyms.  This article will help you understand some of the most common terms.
Technically the CPU or Central Processing Unit is the computer chip that does most of the computational work.  In recent years the term has been used to describe the whole computer casing as well.  RAM or Random Access Memory acts as a temporary scratch pad that enables the CPU to work, you should have at least 8 megs of RAM.  A meg is short for a megabyte or a million bytes.  A byte is the equivalent of a single character.
If you are going to surf the net (search Internet), a few more acronyms will help.  WWW stands for the World Wide Web that you will be searching.  A URL is the Universal Resource Locator or address of a document. The document might be in HTM or HTML (HyperText Markup Language) format.  If so, you will need a browser, such as Netscape, to view it.
Oh, TLA stands for Three Letter Acronym and CERIT are UVI’s Centers for Excellence in Research and Instructional Technology.
